Tsunamis in Indonesia

Dear Mouse,

The reason for the inability to detect the killer tsunami in Indonesia and other Asian countries recently was the absence of an early warning system in the place where it struck. The experts said that there was no tsunami incident in that region so they deemed it not necessary installing one considering the costs of installation and the monitoring operations

The table below shows the tsunamis recorded in Indonesia for the last ten years.

The tsunami that hit the West Coast of Sumatra on December 26, 2004 was the first, not only for the ten- year period but also in the tsunami history of Indonesia.

So was the tsunami in Seram on January 28,2004.

The other places visited by tsusnamis have a record of at least three.

Irian Jaya had three tsunamis; one in 1934, followed by another one in 1996 after 62 years and the most recent was in 2002.

The table below shows that there were also three tsunami incidents in Sulawesi. It was year 1996 when this place was visited by this calamity. It is worthnoting that a tsunami struck in the beginning of the year of 1996 and another one in December of the same year. Before 1996, there was no record of tsunami which makes me think that this is a new place for tsunami alert.

Call it coincidence, but Timor, another place in Indonesia that had tsunami events for the last 10 years had also three incidents. Unlike the first two places mentioned above, Timor's tsunami dated back as early as 1855 in April. After 172 years, it struck the same place in 1982 on a Christmas.

Do we see a pattern of tsunamis in December?

The most recent tsunami event was in 1995.

From these data and those of Taal, we can say that a possility that a place that had its last tsunami more than a century ago can have another one is not remote.

Tsunami events were all over Indonesia. Many of them occurred in no specific place. Table below shows that there were nine of them since 1884.

Intervals of tsunami events ranged from 8 to 22 years except between 1984 and 1923 where the gap was 61 years and the year 1995 where interval between the last and the next tsunami was only one month and six days.

Jut like Irian Jaya, Timor and Sulawesi, Halmahera also recorded three tsunamis, although the event in 1892 had a more specific place. The first tsunami in 1994 struck in January, followed in October in the same year.

Among the places that had tsunamis for the last ten years, Java has the longest history, dating as back as 1722.

There were 12 of them with intervals ranging from one year in 1862-63 and 77 years between 1994 and 1917.

The tsunami in South Sumatra on February 5, 1994 was the first for this region.

From these statistics, can we safely assume that the earth crusts that move and cause underneath earthquake could have moved and were affecting new regions in the country.

For the past centuries, Banda Sea had the most number of tsunamis.

More of these. Sa pagbabalik ng THE BUZZ. ehek.
