The Youngest Pope was a Womanizer ?

Dear mouse,

Don't get scandalized. During the time when there was no separation of Church and State errm even until now, apprently there is none, there was an 18th year old pope and a womanizer at that.

Read his bio.

Born: c. 937 (Germany)

Died: May 14, 964

Pope: December 16, 955 - December 4, 963 (7 years, 11 months) Restored Holy Roman Empire: 962

Biography:

Pope John XII was just 18 years old when he was elected pope on the orders of Duke Alberic II of Spoleto, ruler Rome and his father. This was very much a scandal, something made even worse by the fact that he was such a womanizer that the papal palace came to be described as a brothel. This, however, did not affect his popularity and standing outside Italy.

John XII was only the second pope in history to have changed his name from that which he was born with, Octavian. When he crowned the German king Otto I, he restored the Holy Roman Empire - this, in turn, allowed Otto and his successors to exert secular influence over future papal elections. More than that, Otto managed to convene a Roman synod which deposed John on December 4, 963. He, however, managed to depose his successor and returned to the papacy. It is believed that he later died in the arms of a mistress.

actually..John XII was crowned Pontifex Maximus on December 16, 956 he did his pontificate until May 14,964.He was deposed by a Council in Rome on December 4,963. He was not the only Pope who was a womanizer. The Medici and the Borghese Popes are all womanizer also, and also young. You have to understand, the role of the Popes during those times is to see to it that Holy Roman Empire is taken cared of by the ruling Emperor and that the church is part political during those time. There's lots of scandals about the Popes, this particular Pope is an angel, compared to those that carries the last names Borghese and Medici. The Cardinal's hat is being sold by the Pope during those times, not taking into consideration the age and the education of the ones that gets the red had and the cardinals eventually becomes part of the Conclave. There's lots of stories that I can tell you about those Popes that are wacky and strange, but I dont have space in this comment box. I will do it in my blog. The church has its dark moments too.

p.s... i forgot to say, the real name of Pope John XII, elevated to the Papacy at the age of 18 is OTTAVIANO. His elevation is what we call now a POLITICAL APPOINTEE, because of the backer for his elevation as the Pope.

o since u started this....John XII is the son of the Prince of Rome born about the year 937. The father is from the clan of Alberic and the mother from the clan of Hugh. Octavian (Pope John XII) was was derided by the Cardinals over the councils because of his elementary ignorance of Latin. He comes of the House of THEOPHYLACT. In the autum of 954, Octavian's father died. Before the death of his father Alberic, he asked that he be carried to the high altar of St. Peter, on top of the tomb of the saint, and there called upon all the nobles to swear an oath upon the bones of the apostles that they would elect his son prince upon his death, and pope upon the death of the reigning pope. When Octavian's father died, he took the title and that same year the reigning pope died and so all the nobles elected him pope at the age of 16.He was called the Pince-Pope.On his coronation, he took the name John XII, using this name as Pope and using Octavian as prince.During his papacy, he was considered a "Christian Caligula", because he was very fond of gambling and made the Lateran like a brothel, with his gangs violated female pilgrims in the very basilica of St. Peter. His sexual hunger is unsatiable. His casual occupants on his bed is not rewarded in gold but of lands. One of his mistresses that he was so in love with, made her governor of the cities and even gave her the golden crosses and cups of St. Peter himself. He gain enemy in the name of Berenger, a duke of one of the old Lombard Duchies. In the year 960, having a title Pope, he summoned to his aid the emperor Otto of Saxony. But he was then deposed by the Council.I hope this short history 101 is okey with you.
