Doctor to nurse, Programmer to Midwife
Dear Mouse, While some Filipinos raised the issues of patriotism and materialism on the case of doctors- changing- careers- to nurse in order to go abroad, the casualties of the dot.com crash were trying to cope with their less glamorous and low paying jobs just to survive. A former senior software engineer from Silicon Valley who was receiving six figures and was amortizing a car for more than 600 a month is now working as a substitute teacher in a school district with a salary less than 10 per cent of his former take home pay. A lady web developer is now working as a doula (childbrith assistant)(HILOT sa Tagalog)and developing a practice as an accupressure massage therapist ( masahista sa Tagalog)in order to bring food in the table. Two years and many months, it is not only the tech jobs that are slowly disappearing. Jobs that do not require personal attention and can be done thru telephone, such as call telemarketers; jobs that can be done thru computers such as payroll, paralegals, etc were being offshored to low-cost highly educated regions such as India and China. With the unemployment benefits, the displaced people are encouraged to change careers thru government funded projects that equip people of skills that they think give them better chance to be employed.
